World By My Side – By Abraham Mathew

About The Author: The author was born in Kochi, Kerala and is a retired senior Central Banker. He did his studies across many states. His pursuit for poetry started after his retirement from service. He is now settled in Ernakulam, Kerala and engages himself in varied social activities in and around the city.

Summary Of The Book: ‘World by my side’ is a string of fertile imaginations of someone past his middle age, whose views on love and romance break free of taboos and hypocrisies. His poems also depict love for nature and mankind. His belief, that the co-existence of flora and fauna is the essence of life, is also echoed in a few of his poems. In one of his poems, he also takes a jibe at the world where the old are subtly pushed into the background. The book also reflects how words have the power to hurt as well as comfort people.

1. Can you tell us a little about your book?

The book is a compilation of thirty poems selected from numerous poems attempted.

2. Is there a specific event that inspired this story or was this an out of the blue idea?

If one perceives the book in a manner as perceived by me, they would discover that every poem is linked to one another in a way making one walk down the memory lane of one’s life.

3. What got you writing in the first place?

It’s the love for life and nature.

4. What was your impression of your first draft when you read it?

Whether this was a publishable material.

5. Which part of your poem connects the most with you? Why?

The poem ‘one more dawn’ and ‘an Angel in heaven’ were two life incidents of sorrow. Both were written when I lost my very dear ones.

6. What makes your book the one to read?

I cannot say this for others, but for me my poems are different definitions of life as I see it.

7. What was the best advice you got while writing?

Haha. Keep the language simple and do not spoil the flow of ideas by concentrating on rhyming of the lines.

8. Who’s your all-time favourite author? Which book of his/hers made you fall in love with them?

Robert Frost, a nature poet. ‘Stopping by woods on a snowy evening’ is my favourite poem. The last line fits me well. ‘And miles to go before I sleep and miles to go before, I sleep’.

9. What is your evergreen tip to the writers out there?

Don’t just see what’s around but try to link all you see with incidents in your life. That would open up your poetic acumen.

10. What was your hardest scene to write?

A poem called ‘Truth never matters’ contradicts your thinking that while in active service you are involved in doing yeomen service to the community. After retirement it dawns on you that you were only a cog in a wheel. This idea was the hardest scene to depict.

11. Do you have another plot brewing?

Of course, but cannot indicate a target time for completion.
