Building Chumbak: The Story of Shubhra Chaddha’s Entrepreneurial Leap

Driven by a relentless pursuit of her goals, Shubhra Chaddha took the bold step of selling her house. Her unwavering belief in her business idea and in herself paid off, and today, she is the owner of a company worth crores.

But how did Shubhra Chaddha achieve this remarkable journey? Let’s find out.

Shubhra earned her degree in commerce from Mount Carmel College in Bangalore and later completed her master’s in PR and advertising from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. After finishing her studies, she worked in the corporate sector for several years, earning a good salary.

The Business Idea Sparked by Travel

In 2005, Shubhra married Vivek Prabhakar, and in 2008, they welcomed a daughter. During her break from work for her daughter’s birth, Shubhra had the opportunity to contemplate her business idea. Both Shubhra and her husband loved traveling to different places and collecting unique items from those locations.

She noticed that many international visitors to India also liked to take home special souvenirs representing India. This observation sparked her business idea. Thus, Shubhra’s company, Chumbak Design, was born, with her husband Vivek joining the venture.

Creating Unique Gifts for Tourists

Buying a Taj Mahal replica as a symbol of India had become cliché, so Shubhra designed unique gifts, such as fridge magnets, which also represented her company’s name. They needed substantial funds to start the business, and it wasn’t possible with their job savings alone. So, they sold their house, raising 40 lakh rupees, and started the business from their apartment. Initially, the business struggled, and it was on the brink of shutting down within the first six months.

However, Shubhra and Vivek did not give up during these tough times. Their perseverance paid off, and in 2010, they opened their own lifestyle store. The store offered not only gifts but also ready-made clothes, artificial jewelry, and home decor items. Today, Chumbak Design has over 70 stores across various cities in India.

In the world of business startups, Shubhra Chaddha stands as an inspiration for many women. From home, she conceptualized a business idea that has grown into a major enterprise, proving that determination and belief in oneself can lead to great success.
