Exclusive Interview with Author Priya Tikhe: Six Windows Into the Soul – Stories of Love, Loss, Hope & Resilience | Literary Fiction Short Story Collection Set in Rural India

Six Windows Into the Soul: Stories of Love, Loss, Hope & Resilience is a compelling anthology of six stories that explores the emotional complexities of relationships, identity, resilience, and social realities. Inspired by everyday experiences and the author’s personal and professional journey, the collection reflects the silent struggles, difficult choices, and enduring hope that shape human lives. Set against the backdrop of rural and semi-rural India, the stories draw inspiration from the literary legacy of the author’s grandfather, the legendary Tamil writer T. Janakiraman. Each story encourages readers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the values of compassion, courage, empathy, and self-discovery, making this collection both thought-provoking and deeply relatable.

1. What inspired you to write this particular book, and how did the idea for the story come to you?

Writing has always been a part of my life, even though I never imagined becoming an author. Coming from a family of writers, my first Hindi poetry book, साँसों का सफर, surprised many who expected me to write in English. In 2023, I paused my regular writing to create something more personal—stories inspired by everyday life, relationships, resilience, and social realities. My experience in human resources across Fortune 500 companies and high-growth organizations exposed me to diverse human emotions and experiences, which became the foundation of this book. After months of reflection, the stories came together naturally in 2025. This book is the culmination of years of observation, lived experiences, and a deep desire to tell meaningful stories that resonate with readers.

2. Can you share some insights into your writing process? Do you follow a specific routine or have any unique rituals that help you get into the creative flow?

My writing process is intuitive rather than structured. I do not follow a fixed routine or wait for inspiration to arrive. Instead, I write whenever an idea or emotion feels compelling—often in the quiet hours of the night. Balancing a demanding corporate career with storytelling has taught me to capture thoughts whenever they arise. My stories evolve naturally from lived experiences, observations, and human emotions rather than rigid planning. If I have one writing ritual, it is this: I write only when I feel deeply connected to what I want to express. For me, writing is less about discipline in time and more about honesty in storytelling.

3. The characters in your book are quite distinct and memorable. Are they based on real people, or did they evolve purely from your imagination?

The characters in my book are inspired by real-life experiences, but they are not direct portrayals of any one individual. Over the years, my professional journey, personal relationships, and everyday observations have introduced me to people whose emotions, strengths, and struggles left a lasting impression. I have woven together these experiences with imagination to create authentic and relatable characters. While the stories are fictional, the emotions they convey are real, reflecting the complexities of human relationships and the resilience that shapes our lives.

4. Your book delves into important social issues. What motivated you to explore these themes, and what messages do you hope readers will take away from your work?

This book explores social issues that many of us experience but rarely discuss openly. Through my personal experiences and interactions across diverse professional and social environments, I have witnessed the emotional compromises, silent struggles, and resilience that shape people’s lives. I felt a responsibility to bring these realities into the spotlight through storytelling. I hope readers see reflections of their own lives in these stories, find the courage to question long-held social norms, and engage in meaningful conversations. If the book inspires empathy, self-reflection, and even a few honest discussions about these important issues, I will consider it a meaningful achievement.

5. The world-building in your novel is incredibly rich and immersive. How did you create the setting, and did you draw inspiration from any real-world locations or historical events?

The stories are deeply influenced by lived experiences. Many of the settings are inspired by places I have personally known—cities I have worked in, homes I have grown up around, and environments that have shaped both my professional and personal journey. Conversations with family and friends, along with their memories and experiences, also helped shape the emotional landscape of these stories. While the locations are fictionalized, their essence, social fabric, and emotional depth are rooted in reality. For me, world-building was less about creating a new world and more about presenting the one we already live in with greater honesty and authenticity.

6. As a writer, how do you balance the need for originality with the expectations of the genre? Were there any challenges in putting your unique spin on familiar elements?

Originality comes naturally to me because my stories are rooted in real emotions, lived experiences, and human relationships. While the themes may be familiar, the perspective is deeply personal. One of the biggest challenges was balancing writing with demanding corporate and family responsibilities, which often delayed my progress. There were also moments of self-doubt, but I learned to trust my voice instead of seeking external validation. Once I embraced my own storytelling style, the narrative evolved with greater clarity, authenticity, and confidence.
