Shobhinav, who plays Neem Karoli Baba in Hanuman Ansh, recently shared the unusual story behind his casting during a podcast conversation. Until shortly before filming his scenes, he was working on the same project as a second assistant director. Then, within a matter of hours, circumstances changed and he found himself preparing to play the film’s central character.
The decision eventually became a defining moment not only for Shobhinav but also for the film. Released in theatres on August 7, 2026, Hanuman Ansh was reportedly made on a modest budget of around ₹2 crore and has gone on to earn more than ₹45 crore at the Indian box office.
A Personal Connection With Neem Karoli Baba
For Shobhinav, playing Neem Karoli Baba was far more personal than an ordinary acting assignment.
He says he has been a devotee of Neem Karoli Baba since 2009 and has followed a spiritual way of life for years. His connection with faith deepened further in 2018, when he began observing Tuesday fasts dedicated to Lord Hanuman and adopted a completely vegetarian lifestyle.
Looking back, Shobhinav believes those years may have unknowingly prepared him for the role that eventually came his way.
He described the experience as something guided by divine grace rather than conventional career planning. Instead of trying to understand why everything was happening so suddenly, he chose to accept the opportunity with faith.
His approach was simple: if Baba Ji had brought him to this point, he would surrender to the experience and trust whatever followed.
He Was Working Behind the Camera Before Everything Changed
Shobhinav did not initially join Hanuman Ansh as its leading man.
His journey with the project began as a second assistant director. His responsibilities included managing props and helping with various requirements on set. Acting as Neem Karoli Baba was not part of his original job.
Then came the unexpected turn.
According to Shobhinav, the actor originally selected to portray Neem Karoli Baba suddenly became seriously ill. This created an immediate problem for the production. The set was ready, crew members were in position and preparations for filming had already been completed.
Rather than putting the shoot on hold, director Vishal Chaturvedi began looking for another solution.
His attention eventually turned towards someone who was already standing on the set: Shobhinav Satya.
A Five-Hour Test That Changed His Career
The transition was not automatic. Vishal Chaturvedi reportedly put Shobhinav through an extensive audition and screen test lasting around five hours before making the decision.
For Shobhinav, those hours were filled with nervousness.
This was not simply another fictional character. Neem Karoli Baba is deeply respected by millions of followers, and Shobhinav was conscious of the responsibility that came with portraying such a spiritual figure.
He worried about how audiences might react. Would devotees accept him? Would viewers feel that the filmmakers had chosen the wrong person to represent Baba on screen?
Chaturvedi helped him deal with those concerns by asking him to focus on his performance rather than the possible outcome. According to Shobhinav, the director made it clear that worrying about whether the film would succeed or how audiences would respond was the filmmaker’s responsibility.
Shobhinav’s task was simply to trust the process and perform.
His Resemblance to Neem Karoli Baba Surprised the Director
There was another factor working strongly in Shobhinav’s favour.
During the testing process, Vishal Chaturvedi took photographs of him in the character’s appearance. The director was reportedly surprised by the facial similarities he noticed between Shobhinav and Neem Karoli Baba.
Those physical features became one of the important reasons the filmmakers felt confident about moving forward with him.
But appearance alone was not enough.
To help Shobhinav understand the character, Chaturvedi shared insights gathered through years of research. Interestingly, instead of asking the actor to manufacture a completely different personality, the director encouraged him to retain much of his natural behaviour.
His usual way of walking, speaking and even laughing became part of the performance.
That approach appears to have connected with audiences. Following the film’s release, Shobhinav received appreciation for his expressions, screen presence and portrayal of Neem Karoli Baba.
“I Believe Baba Ji Made It Happen”
What makes Shobhinav’s story unusual is the speed at which his position changed.
One day, he was assisting the filmmaking team and handling responsibilities behind the scenes. By the next, he was being prepared to carry the film as its lead actor.
There was barely enough time to process what had happened.
Shobhinav now views that sudden transformation through a spiritual lens. He believes certain events cannot always be understood through planning or logic. Sometimes, he says, when a divine force is writing a chapter of your life, the best thing you can do is surrender and allow it to unfold.
For him, becoming Neem Karoli Baba on screen was one such moment.
Years of devotion, his lifestyle choices and his connection with Hanuman and Neem Karoli Baba suddenly seemed to come together at exactly the right time.
From a ₹2 Crore Film to a Major Box Office Success
The story became even more remarkable after Hanuman Ansh reached theatres.
Made on a reported budget of just around ₹2 crore, the film has collected more than ₹45 crore at the Indian box office, making it one of the standout profitable releases of 2026 based on the figures available.
For Shobhinav Satya, however, the film represents something bigger than box office numbers.
His journey with Hanuman Ansh began behind the camera, without any expectation that he would become its leading face. An unexpected illness, a director willing to take a risk, a demanding five-hour test and Shobhinav’s own spiritual connection with Neem Karoli Baba changed that path almost overnight.
