  • Bihar gets a new airport, PurneaTerminal to be ready in four months

Patna, 20 February 2025: With the vision of Viksit Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Pragati Yatra is traversing every district, ensuring progress across the state. During the third phase of the Pragati Yatra, the Chief Minister had visited Purnea, where he announced development projects worth ₹581 crore and reviewed the progress of Purnea Airport.

Highlighting the need for swift action, he had instructed officials to expedite the work. Following his directives, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has now approved the construction of the terminal building, bringing Bihar closer to having another new airport.

Terminal construction approved at 23% lower cost

Under the tender issued by AAI, the terminal building at Purnea Airport will be constructed at a total cost of ₹33.99 crore, which is 23% less than the earlier estimate of ₹44.15 crore. The tender process was conducted in two phases, with the first bid held in September 12 and the second on September 27. The selection of the final agency is now in its concluding stage, after which construction will begin.

Purnea airport to feature modern amenities

The architectural design for Purnea Airport has already been prepared by AAI. The airport will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, designed to accommodate passenger traffic for the next 30 to 40 years. It will feature five aerobridges, ensuring enhanced passenger connectivity and convenience.

Interim terminal to be constructed on Porta concept

To facilitate the early commencement of flight operations, an interim terminal will be constructed based on the porta concept before the main terminal is completed. AAI has appointed a Deputy General Manager (Engineering) as the project- in-charge and has instructed the contractor to complete the work at the earliest.

As part of the contractual requirements, the construction agency must submit a performance guarantee of ₹1.69 crore and a security deposit of ₹88.30 lakh. Additionally, strict adherence to labor laws will be ensured throughout the project.

Pragati Yatra accelerates progress

In view of the demand for Purnea Airport, CM Nitish Kumar conducted a review meeting during the Pragati Yatra, where he instructed officials to address all obstacles delaying the airport’s development.

Seemanchal, Kosi and Nepal to benefit

The construction of the terminal at Purnea Airport marks a significant milestone in improving air connectivity for the Seemanchal and Kosi regions. Additionally, it will provide a direct air link to West Bengal, Jharkhand, and even Nepal.

Once the interim terminal is completed, flight operations will commence soon after, bringing immense convenience to local travellers and fostering economic growth in the region.
