Online Shopping Scam: What to Do Quickly and How to Improve Your Chances of Recovering the Money

Online Shopping Scam : Discovering that an online purchase was a scam can be stressful. You may have paid for a product that never arrived, received a counterfeit item or realised that the shopping website itself was fake. Whatever the situation, the first few steps you take can make a real difference.

A refund is not guaranteed in every fraud case. However, reporting the transaction quickly gives banks, payment companies and cybercrime authorities a better chance of tracing the money before it is withdrawn or transferred elsewhere.

Save Every Piece of Evidence

Before deleting messages or closing the website, collect all available information connected to the purchase. This evidence will help your bank, payment provider and investigating authorities understand what happened.

Keep the following details ready:

  • Transaction ID, date, time and amount
  • Seller’s bank account number or UPI ID
  • Order confirmation and payment receipt
  • Product listing and website address
  • Screenshots of the offer and payment page
  • Emails, text messages and chat conversations
  • Seller’s phone number and social media details
  • Photographs of any fake, damaged or incorrect product received

Even a small detail may be useful while tracing the transaction, so avoid deleting anything until the complaint has been properly registered.

Contact Your Bank or Payment App Immediately

Your next step should be to inform your bank or payment service without delay. Clearly explain that the transaction is connected to suspected online shopping fraud and request that it be marked or disputed accordingly.

If the payment was made through a UPI app such as Google Pay or PhonePe, report the transaction through the app’s support section as well. You should also contact the bank account linked to that payment service.

Customers who used a debit or credit card should ask their bank whether the card needs to be blocked. This is especially important if card information was entered on an unfamiliar or suspicious website. Blocking the card can reduce the risk of additional unauthorised transactions.

Call the Cybercrime Helpline on 1930

Financial cyber fraud can be reported through India’s national cybercrime helpline by calling 1930. The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre says this reporting system connects law-enforcement agencies, banks and financial intermediaries so they can act on financial fraud complaints.

Call as soon as you notice the scam. Keep your name, mobile number, address and transaction details ready. You may receive an acknowledgement number after the initial complaint.

According to the official I4C guidance, a person who reports financial fraud through 1930 should complete the formal complaint on the cybercrime portal within 24 hours using the acknowledgement number received by SMS.

Register the Complaint Online

You can also file the complaint through the government’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Select the appropriate option for financial fraud or other cybercrime and provide accurate information.

Upload the payment receipt, screenshots, order details and communication with the seller. Once the complaint is registered, save the acknowledgement number. It can be used to track the status of the case on the portal.

The complaint is generally handled by the relevant State or Union Territory police authorities based on the information provided during registration.

Report the Seller or Website

Do not stop after informing your bank and the cybercrime authorities. File a complaint with the shopping platform or marketplace where the seller was listed.

Explain the issue clearly and attach supporting documents. If the website has a customer service or grievance section, submit the complaint there too. This creates an additional record and may help the platform investigate or restrict the seller.

If the transaction took place through a fake shopping website, save its complete URL before it disappears. Avoid making another payment if the seller asks for a “refund fee,” “verification charge” or any other additional amount.

How Can the Money Be Recovered?

Once a financial fraud complaint reaches the bank and cybercrime authorities, they may try to trace the funds. If the money is still available in the recipient’s account, it may be possible for the concerned institutions to place a hold or freeze on it, subject to verification and the applicable process.

Recovery becomes more difficult when scammers quickly withdraw the money or move it through several accounts. This is why waiting for a seller to respond for several days may reduce the chance of successful intervention.

It is also important to understand that filing a complaint does not automatically guarantee a refund. The result depends on factors such as how quickly the incident was reported, whether the money can still be traced and what evidence is available.

Common Forms of Online Shopping Fraud

Online shopping scams do not always look the same. Some fake sellers accept payment and never dispatch the order. Others deliver low-quality, damaged, incorrect or counterfeit products.

Scammers may also create convincing websites that display expensive products at unusually low prices. Once the customer completes the payment, the seller may stop responding or the website may disappear.

Online shopping is convenient, but a tempting deal should never lead to a rushed payment. If fraud does occur, stay calm, preserve the evidence and report it immediately to your bank, payment provider, the 1930 helpline and the cybercrime portal.
